Mumbai Police Busts Fake Officer Scam, Five Arrested

Mumbai, March 31: The Aarey police in Mumbai have uncovered a gang involved in fraud and blackmail. This group posed as police officers to target unsuspecting individuals. Authorities have arrested five suspects in connection with this case.

The gang members would impersonate police officials to extort money from victims. Shockingly, among the arrested are a journalist and a retired police officer.

The investigation began following a complaint from a 40-year-old woman. She was lured to a villa in Royal Palms, Aarey Colony, under the pretense of a tarot reading. Upon arrival, several individuals intimidated her by claiming to be police officers and threatened to implicate her in a fabricated case.

The suspects coerced the woman into transferring ₹200,000 online by threatening her with a false sex racket case. After receiving the money, they fled the scene.

Following her complaint, the Aarey police registered a case and initiated a technical investigation. The first arrest was made based on bank transactions, leading to the capture of 33-year-old Farhan Mustafa Qadri. During interrogation, he revealed the names of other accomplices, resulting in the arrest of three more men and two women.

The arrested individuals include Swapnali Sunil Nadekar (38), Kavita Ajay Yadav (40), Rahul Surya Kant Kambli (41), Pradeep Mritunjay Pathak (36) – a journalist, and retired Assistant Sub-Inspector Eric Girgol Vegas (60).

Initial investigations indicate that this gang operated in a highly organized manner. They ensnared victims by instilling fear of defamation and legal action to extort money.

The police are now conducting a thorough investigation into the entire gang to determine the extent of their operations and whether they are linked to a larger criminal network.
