New Delhi, April 1: The Vice President of India, C.P. Radhakrishnan, unveiled the book “Tides of Time: History Through Murals in Parliament,” authored by Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty, on Wednesday at the Constitution Hall in New Delhi. This publication was released by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
During the event, the Vice President praised Sudha Murty for her efforts to connect generations with history through the “timeless beauty and profound symbolism” of parliamentary murals. He noted that these murals are not merely artworks but visual narratives reflecting India’s civilizational journey.
He highlighted that democratic practices in India have been continuous, inclusive, and deeply embedded in society, from Vaishali in the north to the Kudavolai system in the south. These traditions are part of a broader civilizational ethos that values dialogue, consensus, and respect for diverse opinions, establishing India as the “mother of democracy.”
Referencing the great Tamil poet Subramania Bharati, the Vice President emphasized India’s wealth of knowledge, dignity, generosity, and cultural depth, stating that such foundations naturally promote inclusivity and respect for all voices.
He commended Prime Minister Modi for incorporating traditional symbols into the Parliament building. He also mentioned the formal display of the sacred Sengol from the Chola dynasty during the President’s address to the joint session of Parliament, describing it as a powerful symbol connecting modern India to its civilizational roots.
The Vice President stated that Parliament embodies the core principles of a vibrant democracy: dialogue, debate, dissent, and discussion. While these elements are crucial, they should ultimately contribute to constructive decision-making in the national interest.
Describing the book as a remarkable tribute to India’s civilizational journey, the Vice President noted that it brings history to life through the descriptions of 124 mural paintings. The book spans from the Indus Valley Civilization to the wisdom of great thinkers like Maharishi Valmiki and Chanakya, as well as the spiritual teachings of Mahavira and Gautama Buddha. He pointed out that it also highlights early democratic traditions in India, the achievements of rulers like Ashoka and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and the cultural richness reflected in monuments like the Konark Sun Temple and movements like the Bhakti movement. Furthermore, it pays homage to India’s freedom struggle, including movements like the Dandi March and the leadership of figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Subhas Chandra Bose.
In reference to the Prime Minister’s vision for a developed India by 2047, the Vice President reiterated the guiding principle of “Development and Heritage,” emphasizing that progress and heritage complement each other. The murals in Parliament embody this philosophy, linking progress with identity, values, and continuity.
He remarked that Sudha Murty exemplifies a rare combination of knowledge, humility, and social commitment in public life. Highlighting her journey from the corporate world to social service and Parliament, he noted that her contributions have always been driven by the broader public interest. He also appreciated the Lok Sabha Secretariat’s efforts in publishing the book.
Reiterating Subramania Bharati’s sentiments, he stressed that despite the diversity of language, region, and culture, India remains united in its national purpose. “India has always been one and will always remain one,” he declared. The Vice President urged citizens to adopt the spirit of “Nation First,” encouraging everyone to dedicate themselves to serving the nation with commitment, integrity, and pride. Present at the event were Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Manohar Lal, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, and author Sudha Murty.
