New Delhi, April 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Wednesday that he has completed his self-enumeration for the 2027 Census, marking the launch of India’s first fully digital census process. He shared this information via the social media platform X.
In his post, PM Modi stated, “I have completed my self-enumeration. Today marks the beginning of the first phase of the 2027 Census, which involves listing houses and related housing activities.” This is the first time data collection for the census will be conducted digitally, allowing citizens to register details about their households themselves.
He further urged the people of India to participate in the census by registering their household information online.
This initiative is significant as the 2027 Census will be India’s first entirely digital enumeration, moving away from the traditional paper-based system that has been in place for years. It is being conducted in two phases under the Census Act of 1948.
The first phase, known as House Listing and Housing Census (HLHC), focuses on collecting data related to housing conditions, properties, amenities, and household details through 33 notified questions.
A notable feature of this census is the introduction of ‘self-enumeration.’ Citizens can voluntarily submit their household information online through a dedicated portal. This 15-day window precedes the door-to-door enumeration that will take place in every state and union territory. The aim is to enhance accuracy, reduce errors, and ensure maximum participation.
The portal supports multiple languages, including English, Hindi, and 14 regional languages.
PM Modi’s involvement and appeal are seen as efforts to promote digital technology and ensure comprehensive coverage. Officials have stated that stringent measures have been implemented for data security, with data centers designated as critical information infrastructure, and the information will be used solely for statistical purposes.
