Imphal, May 30: Senior IPS officer Mukesh Singh has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for Manipur. He arrived in Imphal on Saturday and will formally assume office on June 1.
Mukesh Singh will succeed the current DGP, Rajiv Singh, who has been appointed as Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat. Before this transfer, Mukesh Singh served as the DGP of Ladakh.
Rajiv Singh, an IPS officer from the 1993 batch of the Tripura cadre, was appointed to his new role on May 21. Following his arrival in Imphal, Mukesh Singh met with Chief Minister N. Biren Singh at the Civil Secretariat.
The Chief Minister expressed his best wishes to Mukesh Singh for this significant responsibility in a post on his Facebook handle. He stated that with Singh’s extensive experience and excellent service record, he is confident that Singh will provide strong leadership in maintaining peace, law, order, and public safety across the state.
The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved Mukesh Singh’s transfer to Manipur on an inter-cadre deputation for three years. This decision was made following a proposal received from the Ministry of Home Affairs on May 15, 2026, as per an official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions.
Mukesh Singh is an IPS officer from the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories) cadre. He holds a B.Tech degree in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and joined the IPS in 1996. He took charge as the DGP of Ladakh on January 15, 2026.
Previously, he has held several sensitive positions in Jammu and Kashmir, including serving as Superintendent of Police in Reasi, Pulwama, Poonch, and Jammu during counter-insurgency operations.
Meanwhile, the ACC has also approved the appointment of Rajiv Singh as Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat. Rajiv Singh has been serving as the DGP of Manipur since June 1, 2023, prior to his new role.
Before taking charge as the police chief of Manipur, he worked as Additional Director General of Police in Tripura and later as Inspector General (Operations) at the CRPF headquarters in New Delhi.
