Tragedy Strikes Dahi Handi Festival in Gondia, 21 Injured as Stair Slab Collapses

Gondia, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : A serious incident occurred during the Dahi Handi festival in Gondia, Maharashtra, on September 7. The event, held in Amgaon, attracted large crowds eager to celebrate the traditional festivities. Unfortunately, a stair slab gave way under the weight of attendees, resulting in 21 injuries, six of whom are reported to be in critical condition.

As thousands gathered to witness the festivities, many climbed onto elevated areas, including the stair slab, to get a better view. The slab, unable to support the excessive weight, collapsed suddenly, sending people tumbling down. Panic ensued as bystanders rushed to assist the fallen.

Emergency services quickly transported the injured to the Amgaon rural hospital. Of the 21 injured, 16 received treatment and were discharged, while six others were transferred to Gondia District Hospital for further care. Among these, two individuals remain in a precarious state.

The aftermath of the accident led to chaos at the scene, prompting local residents and event organizers to initiate immediate rescue efforts. This incident has raised significant concerns regarding safety measures and crowd control at the festival.

In a related note, during the Dahi Handi celebrations in Mumbai, traffic police imposed fines totaling ₹1.92 crore for various traffic violations. On Saturday alone, they issued 18,818 e-challans, targeting drivers who broke traffic rules amid the festivities. Violations included dangerous driving, riding without helmets, and exceeding passenger limits. The highest number of fines were issued for obstructing traffic, with 3,727 e-challans recorded for this infraction.
