Monsoon Havoc in Himachal Pradesh: Six Lives Lost and Infrastructure Damage Reported

Shimla, July 2: The monsoon has severely disrupted daily life in Himachal Pradesh as heavy rains have triggered landslides, road blockages, and power outages across the state. According to the State Emergency Operations Center, six fatalities have been reported due to rain-related incidents. Currently, 35 roads remain closed, and 127 distribution transformers are non-functional, with initial damage estimates reaching ₹44.40 lakh.

The continuous rainfall has affected road connectivity in several districts, with Kullu being the hardest hit, where 18 roads are closed. Additionally, multiple road disruptions have occurred in Solan and Chamba districts. Teams from the Public Works Department are actively clearing debris to restore traffic flow.

The power supply has also been impacted, with 127 transformers down across the state, including 86 in Kullu alone. Officials attribute this situation to broken high-tension wires and damaged power cables. The electricity department is working diligently to restore power supply.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of drinking water supply disruptions in any district, and all water supply schemes are operating normally.

The State Emergency Operations Center has confirmed that four deaths have occurred due to rain and disaster-related incidents. In Kangra district, three individuals lost their lives due to electrocution and lightning strikes, while one fatality was reported in Mandi district. Additionally, separate road accidents in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts resulted in one death each, bringing the total number of fatalities related to the monsoon to six.

Preliminary reports estimate the damage to public and private property, as well as livestock, at ₹44.40 lakh, with Kangra district recording the highest economic loss of approximately ₹16 lakh.

The state government, district administration, disaster management agencies, and relevant departments are on high alert. The meteorological department has predicted heavy rainfall in several parts of the state over the next few days. Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and adhere to the guidelines issued by the weather department.
