Monsoon Arrives in Mumbai with Heavy Rainfall and Alerts Issued

Mumbai, June 24: The economic capital of India, Mumbai, experienced heavy rainfall overnight as the monsoon made its arrival. Early Wednesday morning, as the downpour continued, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a three-hour ‘Orange Alert’ for Mumbai and Palghar.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) referenced the IMD in a post on X, stating, “There is a possibility of thunderstorms with lightning and very heavy rainfall in some areas, along with strong winds reaching speeds of 40-60 km/h.”

Due to the continuous rain overnight, several areas in the city reported significant waterlogging. According to the weather department, an average rainfall of 78 mm was recorded in the city.

In Thane, trees fell on several vehicles. Following this incident, fire brigade personnel and staff from the Vartak Nagar Ward Committee’s disaster management cell arrived at the scene. Officials reported that with the help of the fire brigade and disaster management staff, the fallen trees were cut and removed.

In a similar incident, a long retaining wall collapsed next to the Sun Heights building in the Vikroli area of Mumbai. The wall was adjacent to the building and the road. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. The municipal corporation team arrived to clear the debris.

The IMD indicated that conditions remain favorable for the monsoon to advance further into Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh. It also stated that additional rainfall is expected in these states in the coming days.

In a statement, the IMD noted, “The southwest monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of the Arabian Sea, including additional areas of Maharashtra, Telangana, and Odisha, as well as further regions of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar.”

According to the BMC, all major subways in Mumbai remained open, and traffic flow was largely smooth. Suburban rail services continued to operate normally, and BEST buses ran without interruption.

The Western Railway reported from the IMD that the city and surrounding areas would generally remain cloudy, with a likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. However, trains on the Mumbai suburban and harbor lines will continue to run regularly.

The IMD issued an Orange Alert for moderate to heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Sindhudurg at 7 AM. This alert is valid for three hours. Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution throughout the day.
