Dhaka, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : In Dhaka, the mother of prominent Hindu rights leader Chinmoy Krishna Das passed away on Thursday, unable to fulfill her final wish of seeing her imprisoned son. The prison authorities had denied her request for parole.
Seventy-one-year-old Sandhya Rani Dhar died at the Sri Sri Pundarik Dham Ashram in Hathajari, Chattogram district. Just two days prior, she had expressed her desire to visit the ashram where her son has been incarcerated for an extended period.
Sandhya had been hospitalized recently due to illness, where doctors confirmed she was suffering from cancer. However, according to the Bangladeshi Bengali newspaper Kalbela, she preferred to spend her final days at the ashram rather than in the hospital.
Her brother, Anjan Kumar Dhar, confirmed her passing, stating with a heavy heart to Kalbela, “My mother has left us. My brother couldn’t even see her while she was alive.” Another brother, Ranjan Kumar Dhar, mentioned, “We are now taking our mother’s body to the Hathajari sub-district health complex. From there, we will apply for my brother’s release on parole with a medical certificate. Our mother will be cremated at Pundarik Dham in Hathajari.”
Sources cited by Kalbela reported that Sandhya Rani Dhar had been mentally distressed due to her son’s lengthy prison sentence. The news of his illness further shattered her, compounded by repeated denials of bail and his inability to secure release.
Despite her hopes for her son’s release following a recent bail hearing, the lack of approval only heightened her anxieties. On Wednesday, Das’s family submitted a request to the Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram, Mohammad Jahidul Islam Mia, seeking conditional parole to allow their ailing mother to meet her son.
However, according to reports from the Bangladeshi daily Samakal, the authorities informed the family that there is no provision for granting parole to a prisoner for the purpose of visiting a sick relative.
Chattogram’s Additional District Magistrate Syed Mahbubul Haque stated that Das’s family had applied for conditional temporary release but emphasized that parole is not granted under such circumstances. Parole is only considered in cases of a relative’s death, he added, and this information was communicated to the family verbally.
Local media reports indicated that Chinmoy Krishna Das had received bail in two cases but remained imprisoned due to two other pending cases. He was arrested in Dhaka on November 25, 2024, and was sent to jail the following day after his bail application was rejected by a Chattogram court. On December 11, that court again denied bail in the matter.
