New Delhi, February 13: Bangladesh has witnessed a significant victory for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in its 13th parliamentary elections. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to the BNP and its leader, Tarique Rahman, via the social media platform X. Following this, PM Modi also spoke to Rahman over the phone to convey his best wishes for the victory.
In his post on X, PM Modi expressed, “I was very pleased to speak with Tarique Rahman. I congratulated him on the BNP’s remarkable victory in the Bangladesh elections. I extended my best wishes and support for his efforts to fulfill the hopes of the Bangladeshi people.”
PM Modi further emphasized, “As two close neighbors with deep historical and cultural ties, I reaffirmed India’s ongoing commitment to the peace, progress, and prosperity of both nations.”
Earlier, PM Modi had also congratulated the BNP leader. In his X post, he stated, “I sincerely congratulate Tarique Rahman for leading the BNP to a significant victory in the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This win reflects the trust of the Bangladeshi people in your leadership. India stands with a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our diverse relationships and advance our shared development goals.”
The BNP’s government is expected to bring changes, especially in light of the deepening ties with Pakistan during Professor Muhammad Yunus’s tenure. The BNP aims to enhance its diplomatic and strategic relations with India. Issues such as border management, illegal immigration, and water sharing (like the Teesta) may again become prominent.
Previously, relations between the two countries were quite strong during former PM Sheikh Hasina’s term. However, tensions arose during the BNP’s rule under Khaleda Zia before the Awami League took over. With Tarique Rahman now at the helm, there is potential for a shift in this dynamic.
According to Bangladeshi media outlet The Daily Star, counting has been completed for 297 out of 299 seats, with the BNP and its coalition winning 212 seats. Additionally, the Jamaat-e-Islami party secured 77 seats, while the Islamic Movement of Bangladesh won one seat, and another party captured seven seats.
