Uttar Pradesh Aims to Become the Spiritual Capital of the World

Lucknow, April 10: Uttar Pradesh is making significant strides towards its goal of becoming the world’s spiritual capital. The Buddhist circuit, stretching from Sarnath to Kushinagar and from Shravasti to Kapilavastu, is emerging not only as a center of faith but also as a robust pillar for global tourism, investment, and cultural diplomacy.

Recently, the International Buddhist Conclave 2026 held in Kushinagar opened new avenues for this vision. The Buddhist circuit in Uttar Pradesh is evolving from a religious tourism hub into an engine for economic development. In 2025, over 8.2 million tourists visited key Buddhist sites such as Sarnath, Kushinagar, Shravasti, Kaushambi, Sankisa, and Kapilavastu, confirming that Uttar Pradesh has become an essential destination for the global Buddhist community.

A spokesperson for the state government stated that efforts are underway to connect these sites with world-class facilities. Improved road and air connectivity, digital guidance, modern tourism amenities, and international-level services are being developed to provide foreign tourists with a seamless and attractive experience. Additionally, the hotel industry, transportation, tour guides, handicrafts, and local products are gaining momentum, strengthening the local economy.

The recent International Buddhist Conclave 2026 has further enhanced Uttar Pradesh’s global identity. Over 2,300 devotees participated, with representatives from countries such as Thailand, Japan, Myanmar, Bhutan, and Nepal giving it an international flavor. The conclave saw investment proposals worth approximately ₹30 billion, indicating that the Buddhist circuit is becoming an attractive investment hub.

An official noted that under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, policies promoting religious tourism are steering the state’s economy in a new direction. The roadmap for ‘Developed Uttar Pradesh @ 2047’ outlines a significant role for the Buddhist circuit. The aim is to increase the state’s contribution to tourism-based Gross Value Added (GVA) from the current 9.2% to 16% by 2047, along with plans to raise the number of UNESCO-recognized heritage sites from seven to twenty.

This sacred land, where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon and attained Mahaparinirvana, is on a path to carve out a new global identity. Well-planned policies, successful international events, and increasing investment proposals signal that Uttar Pradesh’s Buddhist circuit is set to reach new heights in both spiritual and economic realms in the coming years.
