Aizawl, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian women’s hockey team made history by winning a gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. This victory marks the first gold for the team in 44 years at the Asian Games.
Two players from Mizoram, Lalremsiami and Lalthanthluangi, played pivotal roles in this remarkable achievement. Upon returning to their hometown, they received a warm welcome. In a ceremony held at the Mualpui K.R. Dengthluama Indoor Stadium, Chief Minister Lalduhoma recognized their success and praised their contributions. The Mizoram government announced a reward of 40 lakh rupees for each player.
Speaking to the media, Chief Minister Lalduhoma stated, “This will prove to be a game changer for sports in both Mizoram and the entire country.”
In the final match, India triumphed over China with a score of 1-0, thanks to a goal scored by Lalremsiami in the 10th minute.
The Indian women’s hockey team made its debut at the Asian Games in 1982, winning gold in their first appearance by defeating South Korea. However, it took 44 years for the team to reclaim the gold medal, which they achieved by overcoming China in the 2026 finale.
During this long wait, the team reached the finals twice, facing defeats against South Korea in 1998 and Japan in 2018. They also secured bronze medals in 1986, 2006, 2014, and 2022.
This year is particularly significant as it marks the first time both the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams have won gold medals at the same Asian Games. The men’s team secured their gold by defeating Malaysia 5-1, marking their second consecutive gold medal.
