New Delhi, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : Ishan Kishan, the wicketkeeper-batsman, spoke about his return to the national cricket team following the first T20 International match against the West Indies. After India’s eight-wicket victory, Kishan reflected on how time away from the team allowed him to identify his weaknesses and enhance his fitness, batting skills, and performance in domestic cricket.
In the match, Kishan scored an unbeaten 37 runs. He emphasized that instead of worrying about selection issues, he is now focused on consistently performing well whenever given the opportunity. At 27, Kishan’s return is a testament to his more thoughtful approach to the game. He expressed that rather than dwelling on the possibility of being dropped again, he aims to concentrate on aspects he can control, such as preparation, performance, and contributing to the team.
Speaking to ‘GeoStar,’ Kishan shared, “When I was dropped from the international team, I realized the consequences of my mistakes. Therefore, I worked on my fitness and batting. I remained patient and focused on correcting my errors through strong performances in domestic cricket. I knew that if I excelled in domestic matches, opportunities would arise, and my hard work led to my return to the national team.”
Kishan’s innings demonstrated the importance of understanding the game’s demands rather than forcing his style of play. As Shreyas Iyer quickly scored runs, Kishan focused on rotating the strike and capitalizing on favorable deliveries.
He added, “Once you return to the team, you don’t think about the possibility of being dropped again. The key is to enjoy cricket and focus on contributing your best to the team’s success. My job is to keep scoring runs, and if I can do that, everything else will fall into place.”
His mindset was evident during the match, especially after the early dismissals of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Kishan partnered with captain Shreyas Iyer, guiding the team in their chase. Together, they formed an unbeaten 137-run partnership, with Iyer scoring a memorable unbeaten 102 and Kishan finishing with 37 not out.
As a result, under Iyer’s captaincy, India secured a convincing victory by eight wickets. After choosing to bowl first, the Indian team restricted the West Indies to 171 runs. Thanks to Iyer’s century, India chased down the target of 172 runs in just 14.4 overs, losing only two wickets.
