Aizawl, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : Mizoram Governor General VK Singh (Retired) emphasized the unique challenges and opportunities for engineering in Northeast India during a recent summit in New Delhi. Speaking at the “Institution of Engineers (India) Industry and Education Excellence Summit and Awards 2026,” he noted that the region’s difficult terrain and environmentally sensitive areas present significant engineering challenges but also create ample opportunities for innovation.
Singh described the Northeast as a potential “living laboratory” for robust engineering solutions, particularly highlighting Mizoram’s example. He stated that infrastructure must adapt to the region’s geographical conditions, withstand climate change, and be digitally enabled.
The Governor urged engineers to contribute to the vision of a “Developed India 2047,” asserting that the future of India lies firmly in the hands of its engineers. He pointed out that engineers have played a crucial role in India’s development history, and the nation now competes not only for market access but also for leadership in technology.
Singh stressed the importance of utilizing India’s vast pool of scientific and technical talent effectively. He called on engineers to strive for quality, reliability, and trustworthiness in Indian engineering, aiming for excellence in these areas.
He also discussed the need for progress in sectors like Digital India, space technology, geospatial technology, defense engineering, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies. Emphasizing the roles and responsibilities of engineers in these fields, he stated that merely producing a large number of engineers is insufficient. Future engineers must possess technical depth and a system-based thinking approach.
Quality and standards should be viewed as strategic assets, Singh added, so that India’s technology and talent can earn the trust of other nations. The summit brought together industry leaders, policymakers, academics, and engineering professionals to discuss India’s growing role in global engineering and technology.
Founded in 1920, the Institution of Engineers (India) is the largest multi-disciplinary professional organization for engineers in the country, with over 260,000 corporate members representing 15 engineering disciplines.
