West Bengal Chief Minister Promises to Withdraw Cases Linked to Kurmi Movement

West Bengals CM announced the withdrawal of cases against Kurmi protesters and plans to include Kurmali in the constitutions eighth schedule.

Kolkata, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Sunday that the previous Trinamool Congress government will withdraw all cases against individuals involved in the Kurmi movement. This declaration came during the Karam Mahasamavesh cultural event in Purulia district.

Adhikari also revealed plans to include the Kurmali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. While addressing attendees, he accused the former Trinamool government of creating rifts among the Kurmi and other communities, which he claimed isolated the Jangalmahal region.

Recently, the state government indicated it would send a ‘forward general justification report’ to the central government to include the Kurmi community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. During the event, in the presence of prominent Kurmi leader Ajit Mahto, Adhikari reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the residents of Bankura and Purulia no longer feel marginalized.

He criticized the previous administration for spreading falsehoods and inciting discord among indigenous populations, alleging that dissenters faced harassment. He stated that police were misused, resulting in false cases against individuals, including children and the elderly.

In announcing the withdrawal of cases against Kurmi protesters, Adhikari emphasized the government’s duty to uphold the dignity of language, culture, traditions, and rights. He condemned the former government’s actions regarding resource management, pledging that his administration would not auction off natural resources during his tenure.

As the chief guest at the Karam Mahasamavesh held at Karadi Maidan in Purulia-First Block, Adhikari noted that this was the first time a chief minister had been invited to this event. He also announced a budget allocation of ₹50 crore for the Kurmi Development Board, promising to increase the amount if necessary.

Additionally, he mentioned plans to initiate air travel from Purulia, renovate the Purulia Zoo, and arrange for the introduction of cheetahs in the district.
