Plateau State, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : A wave of violence in Plateau State, Nigeria, has claimed at least nine lives following separate attacks by unidentified gunmen. The incidents have heightened tensions in the affected areas.
Local media reports indicate that the assaults took place between Saturday night and early Sunday morning, targeting communities in Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and surrounding regions.
In one incident, gunmen attacked a bus in the Barkin Ladi area on Saturday night, resulting in five fatalities. On Sunday morning, four more individuals were shot and killed while heading to church.
Bulus Dabit, president of the Mwaghavul Development Association, noted that those on the bus were laborers traveling to another city for work.
In the aftermath of the attacks, many residents have fled their villages, while others remain in their communities, bracing for potential further violence.
Gambo Abubakar, secretary of the Barkin Ladi branch of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, suggested that the attacks might be linked to recent cattle thefts, although no group has claimed responsibility for the violence.
Police have launched an investigation and are conducting operations to locate the assailants.
Plateau State, situated in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, frequently experiences violent clashes over land and resources among various communities. This recent violence follows an earlier attack on September 13, where motorcycle-riding gunmen assaulted a commercial bus, killing nine people. That case is also under investigation.
