New Delhi, April 15: Former captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, Mithali Raj, recently met with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in Tirupati. Following their meeting, Raj commended the progress of the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan’ initiative, calling it a vital step towards inclusivity and empowerment.
Raj expressed her gratitude on social media platform X, stating, “Thank you for your kind words, Ma’am. It was wonderful to speak with you in Tirupati. The advancements surrounding ‘Nari Shakti Vandan’ are truly inspiring, and it represents a necessary step towards greater representation and inclusivity in our democracy.”
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had previously praised Raj’s support for the initiative. On X, she wrote, “The period from April 16-18 will be a significant moment for the country. I had a great conversation with the legendary cricketer and former captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, Mithali Raj, in Tirupati. Her support for ‘Nari Shakti Vandan’ reflects a larger national sentiment where women are stepping into leadership roles through their achievements. Increased representation of women in Parliament will add new depth to India’s democratic journey.”
This conversation between Gupta and Raj took place ahead of discussions in Parliament regarding the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act.’ The discussions will focus on proposed amendments to the Women’s Reservation Law, passed in September 2023, which reserves one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
Since retiring from cricket, Mithali Raj has been active in commentary and various cricket-related activities. She serves as a consultant for women’s cricket operations at the Andhra Cricket Association. Last year, a stand was inaugurated in her name during the ODI World Cup 2025.
