Paris, June 6: In a stunning display of talent, 19-year-old Mira Andreeva clinched her first Grand Slam title by defeating Maaja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 in the Women’s Singles final at the French Open on Saturday. With this victory, the eighth-seeded Russian became the youngest woman to win the singles championship in Paris since Monica Seles in 1992.
The match at Roland-Garros lasted 1 hour and 22 minutes. It began with both players showing signs of nerves, affected by strong winds. The first four games saw multiple service breaks as neither player could find their rhythm. World No. 114 Chwalinska briefly captured the audience’s attention by being the first to hold serve.
However, Andreeva quickly regained her composure, showcasing the patience that has become her trademark. She dominated the match by winning nine consecutive games, taking a commanding lead of 6-3, 5-0 after a competitive start. Although she missed her first opportunity to serve for the match, Andreeva maintained her focus and broke Chwalinska’s serve to secure her monumental victory.
Andreeva’s journey at Roland-Garros has been remarkable. She first entered the main draw in 2023 after progressing through the qualifying rounds and made a name for herself by reaching the semifinals. Two years later, she returned to this prestigious clay-court tournament and ultimately claimed the coveted title.
After her victory, an emotional Andreeva fell to the court in celebration and embraced her coach, Conchita Martínez. The former World No. 2 and 1994 Wimbledon champion has played a crucial role in refining Andreeva’s game.
During the trophy ceremony, Andreeva expressed her disbelief, saying, “I have been watching Roland-Garros on TV since I was very young. Winning this tournament has always been my dream. Honestly, I can’t believe I am holding this trophy right now.”
