Mehbooba Mufti Urges Immediate Release of Protesters Following Khameneis Death

Srinagar, March 7: Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former Chief Minister, has made a heartfelt appeal to the Jammu and Kashmir police. She urged them to release all protesters, including women, who were detained for participating in peaceful rallies following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Mufti stated, “Many protesters, including women in Kashmir, were arrested for participating peacefully in rallies after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Authorities had assured their families that they would be released soon, but unfortunately, that has not happened. I request the Jammu and Kashmir police to consider their release as soon as possible.”

This appeal comes amid widespread mourning and protests in the Kashmir Valley following Khamenei’s death, attributed to US-Israel attacks. Since March 1, thousands, particularly from the Shia community, have taken to the streets.

Rallies have been held in areas such as Lal Chowk, Budgam, and Baramulla, where demonstrators chanted slogans against the US and Israel while carrying posters of Khamenei. In some locations, effigies of Trump and Netanyahu were burned.

Mufti has previously condemned these events, stating they would escalate regional instability. She also questioned the central government for not condemning the attacks on Iran. During the protests, police employed mild measures, including tear gas and baton charges in some areas.

The PDP leader emphasized the right to mourn and show solidarity. She appealed to the DGP of Jammu and Kashmir police to handle the situation with sensitivity and to release those in custody. “Those expressing their feelings peacefully should not be treated as criminals,” she asserted.
