Jiangxi, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : A devastating landslide in Jiangxi Province, eastern China, has resulted in the confirmed deaths of 12 individuals in the village of Mingkeng. As of Tuesday evening, one person remains missing, prompting ongoing search efforts by rescue teams.
The tragedy unfolded after several days of heavy rainfall, which also triggered landslides in Zhuoan and Tanghu townships. Reports indicate that one fatality occurred in Zhuoan, with two others still unaccounted for.
According to Xinhua News Agency, rescue operations are underway, focusing on road reinforcement and preventing secondary disasters. Following a series of landslides over the weekend, four fatalities were reported in the nearby province of Suichuan.
Media on the scene reported that by Sunday afternoon, three individuals had died in Mingkeng, with nine others missing due to the landslide. In Yangfen village, also in Jiangxi, two people were reported missing after a landslide, with one confirmed dead by Sunday afternoon.
The main road leading to the affected area has been completely destroyed, complicating rescue efforts. Wan Qiang, a rescuer from China Annen, noted that the damaged road is hindering relief teams’ access to the impacted regions.
Liang Kuan, the deputy mayor of Gao Ping Town, stated that approximately 200 residents from Mingkeng have been relocated to safety, where they are receiving food and medical assistance. In total, over 5,300 individuals have been moved to safe locations to avoid further disasters. The ongoing storm, Soudal, has affected around 161,500 residents in the province.
China’s Ministry of Natural Resources raised its geological disaster response level from IV to III on Saturday morning, dispatching teams to guide rescue efforts. Additionally, the National Development and Reform Commission allocated 20 million yuan (approximately $2.95 million) from the central natural disaster relief fund to support emergency response and disaster relief operations in Jiangxi. China’s four-tier emergency response system designates Level I as the most severe.
