Lucknow, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati has criticized the central government for its claim of a 7.8 percent GDP growth rate in the first quarter of the current fiscal year. Speaking in Lucknow, she emphasized that amidst rising inflation, poverty, and unemployment, the common people are left wondering whom to trust.
Mayawati called on the government to clarify how the reported growth rate translates into tangible benefits for millions of poor and working-class individuals. In a series of posts on the social media platform X, she noted the intense debate surrounding the GDP figures. While acknowledging that if the government’s claims are taken at face value, it could be seen as positive, she warned that if these numbers are merely a result of manipulation, it would be concerning.
She urged the government to instill hope among the populace by transparently demonstrating how much the high growth rate has benefited the country’s impoverished workers and what they can expect in the future. Mayawati pointed out that GDP figures and claims are often like a double-edged sword, as they are closely tied to the public’s interests and should be assessed against real-world conditions.
According to her, true development is only meaningful when it brings substantial changes to people’s lives and leads to improved well-being. While GDP growth rates are important, the real beneficiaries of this growth should be the millions of hard-working citizens. She stressed that it is crucial for the public to feel the impact of development in their lives; otherwise, the burden of being “the poor population under a wealthy government” will persist for nearly 1.4 billion people.
Mayawati further stated that the country’s development will only be considered a sign of “good days” when millions of marginalized workers are freed from poverty, unemployment, and corruption, allowing them to live with dignity. She also questioned the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to double the pay of outsourced employees and establish the UP Outsourcing Service Corporation to provide job security for 2 million people.
She argued that it would have been more beneficial to offer direct government jobs to individuals, thereby liberating them from the pitfalls of bureaucracy, corruption, and exploitation.
