Lucknow, 2 January. The deaths caused by drinking contaminated water in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, along with many others falling seriously ill, have sparked outrage across the country. Mayawati, national president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), reacted strongly to this tragic incident on Friday, calling it deeply saddening, shocking, and a result of government irresponsibility.

In a post on the social media platform X, Mayawati said, “The distressing and shocking news of multiple innocent citizens dying and many others falling ill due to contaminated water in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, is widely discussed. Such government negligence and apathy have naturally caused widespread anger, not only locally but throughout the nation.”

She added, “Providing clean air and water to people is the foremost duty of any government. However, just as in crime control and law enforcement, government negligence and corruption in basic public services have become extremely harmful, leading to devastated families. This is deeply tragic and worrying. The state government must take strict and continuous measures to prevent such shameful incidents that risk citizens’ lives.”

Mayawati further urged the central government to take serious note of the matter and ensure effective action so that such painful incidents do not occur in any other state.

It is reported that in the Bagirathpura area of Indore, contaminated water consumption led to the death of seven people and left over 40 others ill. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has termed this a grave human rights violation and issued a notice to the Madhya Pradesh Chief Secretary, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.

The number of deaths reported varies, with official government figures stating 4 to 7 deaths, while local residents and some reports claim 10 to 13 fatalities, including a six-month-old infant. More than 100 people have been admitted to various hospitals showing symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting, and other waterborne diseases.
