Manuel Neuer Resumes Training Ahead of Bayerns Clash with Atalanta

Munich, March 17: Just two days before Bayern Munich’s Champions League round-of-16 return leg against Atalanta, Manuel Neuer has returned to goalkeeper training, as reported by the Munich-based outlet Merkur.

The 39-year-old goalkeeper suffered a calf fiber tear during his comeback match against Borussia Mönchengladbach on March 6. In his latest training session, Neuer completed short sprints, performed agility drills, and made ground-level saves, although he did not attempt any airborne dives.

The session was supervised by goalkeeper coach Michael Rechner and rehab coach Simon Martinello, serving as a test ahead of the crucial match against Atalanta. However, it appears that the game may come too soon for Neuer’s full recovery.

Additionally, the availability of Jonas Urbig remains uncertain. The 22-year-old goalkeeper missed Saturday’s 1-1 Bundesliga draw with Bayer Leverkusen due to a concussion sustained in the first leg against Atalanta. A decision regarding his fitness for Wednesday’s match is expected today.

With third-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich and fourth-choice Leon Klanac also unavailable, Bayern may need to rely on a young goalkeeper if neither Neuer nor Urbig is fit to play. One potential option is 16-year-old Leonard Prescott, who has been on the bench for Bayern’s last two matches against Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen. Another possibility is 19-year-old Jannis Bärtl, who has started the last six games for Bayern’s reserves in the Regionalliga this season.
