Chandigarh, May 8: Congress MP Manish Tewari has alleged that during the West Bengal elections, the Election Commission acted as a “tool” for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
He claimed that democratic institutions and government machinery were misused to influence the electoral process in the state.
In an interview with a news agency, Tewari emphasized the need for “evaluation and analysis” of the election results. He accused the ruling BJP of exploiting government resources during the elections.
Tewari pointed out that the results indicate a clear trend: the margin of victory in several seats exceeds the number of individuals allegedly prevented from voting through the SIR (Systematic Identification of Voters).
He criticized the Election Commission for failing to maintain impartiality during the electoral process.
Tewari further stated that there was a significant misuse of government machinery in West Bengal. He asserted that the Election Commission, which is expected to be an impartial body, operated entirely as a tool for the BJP. He described this as a dark period for Indian democracy, predicting negative consequences.
Commenting on the BJP’s prospects in Punjab, Tewari dismissed comparisons between Punjab and other states where the BJP has expanded politically. He stated that Punjab’s social and political character does not align with the BJP’s ideology.
He noted that Punjabis have historically defended their land against invaders. Tewari highlighted that Punjab was the state that compelled the government to withdraw controversial agricultural laws through protests, making comparisons with other states inappropriate.
Addressing recent bombings in Punjab and concerns over law and order, Tewari remarked that national security issues should not become a subject of political confrontation.
He urged caution against Pakistan’s conspiratorial mindset, insisting that national security should remain free from political agendas.
