Imphal, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : Manipur’s Home Minister, Konthoujam Govind Das Singh, announced on Monday that the state police are investigating a militant attack on three villages in the Kamjong district, located near the India-Myanmar border. This attack occurred on May 7, when armed militants targeted the villages of Z Choro, Namli, and Wangli, which are situated very close to the international border and lack proper fencing.
Responding to a question from Congress MLA Kangujam Ranjit Singh, the Home Minister reported that one person was injured during the assault, and 23 homes were set ablaze. The state government has assessed the damage in the affected villages, estimating losses to exceed ₹5 crore. Reconstruction efforts for the damaged homes have already commenced.
Following the incident, the Home Minister visited the impacted villages with several legislators to distribute relief supplies. He emphasized that these villages are in remote areas, and adequate security measures have been implemented in the region since the attack.
When questioned about the involvement of the Myanmar-based militant group, the Kuki National Front (B faction), the Home Minister stated that the investigation is still ongoing. He cautioned against jumping to conclusions regarding the group’s participation in the attack.
It is noteworthy that Manipur shares a 398-kilometer-long unfenced international border with Myanmar, encompassing the districts of Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Chandel, Kamjong, and Ukhrul.
In a related development, on the same day, a joint operation by Manipur police, Cobra (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action), and women personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) led to the arrest of eight cadres from the Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) in the Kamjong district’s Saikul area. Security forces also raided an illegal KLA camp, seizing a cache of weapons and ammunition, including seven automatic firearms.
A police officer confirmed that those arrested and the recovered weapons have been taken into custody for further legal action and investigation. The illegal camp has been sealed by security forces.
