Imphal, August 30: Manipur’s Chief Minister, Yumkham Khemchand Singh, announced on Saturday that the state’s Home Department will reserve 5% of government jobs for outstanding athletes who have brought recognition to the state. This reservation is a tribute to their achievements and contributions.
The Chief Minister stated that if an athlete fails to perform well for three consecutive years, they will be reassigned from sports-related responsibilities back to their regular duties.
Khemchand Singh met with Ariha Pangambam, who recently became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the 10th Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championship held in the Philippines this month. He also met Anjari Pangambam, who secured the seventh position in the same event.
The Chief Minister praised their remarkable performances at the recent Asian Championship and encouraged them to continue their hard work to further elevate the state and the nation’s name. Later, he launched a booklet published by the Manipur Olympic Association. During the launch, he revealed that a special recruitment policy for athletes who have made the state proud was approved in a cabinet meeting held on Friday.
He emphasized that under this policy, the state government will recruit athletes transparently and solely based on merit.
In addition, officials announced that the Manipur government has introduced a ‘Women Empowerment’ scheme aimed at benefiting 350,000 women in the state. A senior officer from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated that the cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yumkham Khemchand Singh, approved this initiative.
The officer explained that the new scheme will benefit members of recognized self-help groups (SHGs) across the state, with each woman beneficiary receiving a grant of ₹10,000 in the first year, followed by interest-free loans in the second and third years.
