United Nations, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on member states to further advance the reforms initiated under the UN-80 initiative during the upcoming General Assembly session.
As the 81st session of the General Assembly approaches, Guterres emphasized the need for member nations not only to maintain the momentum of the UN-80 initiative but to strengthen it. Launched in March 2025 to commemorate the UN’s 80th anniversary, the UN-80 initiative is a comprehensive reform program.
Guterres remarked, “Eighty years ago, our predecessors established the United Nations because they understood that a challenging world needed institutions capable of facing the tests of time. Today, that responsibility lies with us.”
According to a report by Xinhua News Agency, he stated that the aim is to hand over a stronger United Nations than ever before. This includes a UN that operates with greater coordination, uses its resources responsibly, and is more capable of fulfilling its commitments.
The first phase of the UN-80 initiative focused on identifying possibilities. The second phase involved testing those possibilities, gathering evidence, and determining the path forward. Guterres noted that the initiative has now entered its third phase, which will concentrate on decision-making and implementation.
He highlighted that the three work streams of the UN-80 initiative—efficiency in the UN Secretariat, reviewing mandate implementation, and advancing structural and programmatic restructuring—are becoming increasingly clear.
“When I launched the UN-80 initiative, I spoke of ‘responsibility.’ Today, I return to that same word, as it will ultimately determine the success of this initiative,” he said.
Guterres added that the real success of the UN-80 initiative will be assessed in the coming years based on the changes in the UN’s operations resulting from the decisions member states make today.
“The true test of UN-80 will be whether, in the years to come, this organization works differently and better than it does today. Most importantly, the people of the world should see a United Nations that responds more swiftly and effectively to their needs, operates with better coordination, and delivers more results.”
