Man Arrested for Deceiving Women on Dating Apps with Fake Profiles

New Delhi, April 16: The police team from the southwest district has arrested Anand Kumar (35), accused of extortion. The suspect hails from North 24 Parganas in West Bengal. Authorities reported that Anand Kumar created fake profiles on dating and marriage apps, engaging in large-scale honey trapping, romance scams, and blackmailing women.

The accused used various excuses, including love/relationships, marriage proposals, medical emergencies, and admissions to prestigious institutions, to defraud multiple victims and extort money.

Police revealed that they seized four smartphones, eight SIM cards, three debit cards, four gold bangles, and five gold chains from the suspect, all purchased with the money obtained from his scams. He reportedly defrauded over 500 women, amassing nearly two crore rupees through these fraudulent activities. Anand Kumar has a history of involvement in similar crimes.

The police registered an e-FIR based on a victim’s complaint. The victim reported that approximately seven lakh rupees were stolen through a fake Instagram profile operating under the name ‘Vaibhav Arora.’ The victim first encountered the accused on a dating app, where he presented himself as a well-established and respectable individual. After gaining her trust, he communicated via Instagram and later used various mobile numbers on WhatsApp.

According to the police, the accused gradually built an emotional relationship with the victim and promised to marry her. He created another fake identity named ‘Anand,’ claiming to be a close friend who would facilitate family meetings regarding the marriage proposal. Subsequently, he concocted a false story to demand money from the victim.

Trusting his words, the victim transferred nearly seven lakh rupees to him. When she repeatedly requested her money back, the accused ceased responding to calls and messages. Later, he falsely informed her via WhatsApp that ‘Vaibhav’ had died, aiming to sever all contact and evade capture.

Police identified several suspicious mobile numbers and social media accounts during the investigation, maintaining detailed technical surveillance on them. Continuous monitoring and technical tracking revealed that two mobile numbers linked to the accused were active in the North 24 Parganas area of West Bengal. Based on this information, police teams conducted raids at several suspicious locations in the area. They successfully apprehended the accused, Pawan Kumar, in a well-laid trap.
