Kevadia, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : Mammootty, the renowned Malayalam cinema actor, was awarded Best Actor for his outstanding performance in the film “Brahmayugam” at the 72nd National Film Awards. The ceremony took place on September 22, 2026, in Kevadia, Gujarat, where he received a standing ovation from the audience in attendance.
During the official award ceremony, Mammootty accepted the honor from President Droupadi Murmu. As he was recognized under the National Awards’ official protocol, attendees applauded and stood in tribute to his significant contributions to cinema.
“Brahmayugam,” directed by Rahul Sadashivan, is a period horror film featuring actors Arjun Ashokan and Siddharth Bharathan. Set in 17th-century Kerala, it tells the story of a young folk singer named Thevan, who seeks refuge in an abandoned mansion and finds himself trapped in a mysterious world.
The film is uniquely shot entirely in black and white, creating an eerie atmosphere while exploring themes of folklore, mythology, power, caste, and exploitation.
Mammootty is one of India’s most celebrated screen legends, boasting a remarkable 45-year career. He made his debut in “Anubhavangal Palichakal” and rose to prominence in the 1980s. Over his illustrious career, he has won three National Film Awards for Best Actor, seven Kerala State Film Awards, and thirteen Filmfare Awards South. He has also worked in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and English films. In 2026, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan for his contributions to the arts.
This year, Mammootty shared the Best Actor award with Bollywood star Kartik Aaryan, who was recognized for his role in the sports biopic “Chandu Champion.”
