Kolkata, March 9: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has alleged that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) being conducted in the state is aimed at benefiting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming assembly elections.
Speaking to party workers at a protest site, Banerjee challenged that even with the Election Commission’s support, the BJP would not be able to win the elections. She stated, “The people of Bengal will give a strong response to those who try to take away their rights.”
Banerjee raised concerns about how names of individuals who voted in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections could suddenly be removed from the voter list. She questioned, “If someone was elected Prime Minister by voters in 2024, how can some of those same voters now be declared ineligible?”
The Chief Minister called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to investigate this matter. She also questioned the circumstances surrounding the resignation of CV Anand Bose from the position of West Bengal Governor on March 5, noting that three years remained in his term and that an inquiry into his resignation was warranted.
Additionally, she mentioned former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, suggesting that his resignation last July should also be investigated, as he had previously served as the Governor of West Bengal.
Banerjee reiterated that the state government had adhered to all protocols regarding the change of venue for President Droupadi Murmu’s event, asserting that the BJP was unnecessarily politicizing the issue. She emphasized that any disorder during the event should be attributed to the private organizers and the Airports Authority of India, which provided the venue, rather than the state government.
