Burhanpur, May 28: In a shocking turn of events, the Jalgaon police in Maharashtra had declared 26-year-old Shivani dead. Her father and brother were arrested in connection with the alleged murder. However, she was later found alive in Madhya Pradesh, as confirmed by police on Thursday.
According to Burhanpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashutosh Bagdi, the families of Shivani and Arun reported them missing at the Khaknar police station on May 1 and May 9, respectively.
Meanwhile, in an area under the jurisdiction of Jalgaon police, a headless and partially burned body of an unidentified woman was discovered. The police initially identified the body as Shivani’s.
SP Bagdi informed reporters, “Following this, an investigation was conducted, and murder charges were added to the complaint. The girl’s father and brother were arrested.”
However, further investigation revealed that Shivani and Arun were together. The case took a dramatic turn when Shivani appeared before Burhanpur police, stating that her father and brother were innocent and demanding their release.
SP Bagdi described this as a “contradictory situation,” noting, “Shivani was found alive with Arun, while a murder case was registered in her name in Maharashtra.”
This incident has raised serious questions about the police’s handling of the case, as they declared the recovered body as Shivani’s without conducting a DNA test, leading to the wrongful arrest of her father, Bapuram Kalmekar, and brother, Ajay Kalmekar.
SP Bagdi stated, “We have informed the Jalgaon police about this matter and handed over the girl to them. They are conducting further investigations.”
He added that biometrics were used to confirm that she is indeed the person reported missing.
