Lucknow, May 4: The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a significant decision aimed at easing the burden on electricity consumers. Under the directive of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, all prepaid meters will now operate like postpaid smart meters. The billing date will remain unchanged, and consumers will be allowed to pay their outstanding dues in ten installments.
Energy and Additional Energy Sources Minister A.K. Sharma provided detailed information following a meeting regarding this initiative. He confirmed that the billing cycle will remain consistent with the previous postpaid meter system. Consumers will receive their monthly bill via SMS and WhatsApp, detailing their usage from the first day of the month until the end. Those who have changed their mobile numbers can update them accordingly. This decision is expected to provide relief to millions of electricity consumers in the state, making the billing process simpler and more transparent, while ensuring adequate time for payments and quick resolution of complaints.
The Energy Minister stated that all smart meter consumers will receive their bills by the 10th of each month. They will have a 15-day window from the date of receipt to make their payments. If a consumer does not receive their bill on time, they can notify the contact number via WhatsApp chatbots to obtain their bill and outstanding dues. Bills can also be accessed by registering complaints on the 1912 portal.
To enhance consumer convenience, the government has decided that any outstanding bill until April 30 (before the May billing) can be paid in ten installments. For any issues related to billing, large camps will be organized at the block and sub-block levels in May and June to address smart meter billing complaints.
Consumers can also register their complaints on the 1912 portal. For those who had prepaid meters installed after returning their security deposits, the new postpaid system will allow them to pay their security in four installments instead of a lump sum.
During a review of electricity supply, the Energy Minister instructed officials to ensure uninterrupted power supply across all areas as per the scheduled plan. He emphasized the need to replace any faulty transformers immediately to prevent inconvenience to consumers.
