Major Regularization of Unauthorized Colonies in Delhi: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Thanks Central Government

New Delhi, April 7: In a significant move, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, announced the regularization of 1,511 unauthorized colonies in Delhi, providing relief to over 4.5 million migrant residents. This decision, made on Tuesday, also removes the requirement for an approved layout plan for these settlements. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed her gratitude to the central government for this initiative.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) shared a post on the social media platform X, stating, “Under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi Cabinet has sincerely thanked the central government for the historic decision to regularize 1,511 unauthorized colonies in the capital. A unanimous vote of thanks was passed during a meeting held at the Delhi Secretariat, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Urban Development Minister Manohar Lal.”

The CMO further quoted the Chief Minister, saying, “This decision brings new hope and dignity to millions of families. A special provision of ₹800 crore has been allocated in the 2026-27 budget to strengthen the infrastructure of these colonies and accelerate development.”

Manohar Lal emphasized that the decision to regularize the 1,511 unauthorized colonies on a ‘as-is, where-is’ basis marks a historic moment for the residents of Delhi. This announcement is expected to provide relief to the 4.5 million migrant residents living in these unplanned colonies, which have emerged over the past three to four decades due to a shortage of affordable housing for the city’s growing population, often encroaching on agricultural land and violating building regulations.

He noted that the central government launched the ‘Pradhan Mantri Delhi Unauthorized Colonies Awas Adhikar Yojana’ (PM-UDAY) in 2019 to grant ownership rights to residents of these colonies. However, the lack of an approved layout plan had slowed down the implementation of this initiative.
