Kolkata, February 18: A joint operation by the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police and Bihar STF has uncovered an illegal arms manufacturing factory in Bhagalpur district, Bihar. Police reported that five individuals were arrested during the raid conducted on Wednesday.
According to authorities, the factory was operating in a residential building in the Madhusudanpur police station area, specifically on the first floor of a house owned by MD Nasir Ansari. The illegal operation was cleverly concealed under the guise of a spinning mill to hide the arms manufacturing activities.
The arrested individuals include a co-owner of the premises and four alleged arms manufacturers. This operation took place late Tuesday night.
During the search, police seized a significant quantity of illegal weapons and manufacturing equipment. The recovered items included 20 semi-finished indigenous 7.65 mm pistols, 8 pistol barrels, a lathe machine, two milling machines, a drill machine, a grinding and polishing machine, a hand grinder, and a large amount of tools and raw materials used in arms production.
The arrested suspects have been identified as MD Monazir, MD Shadab Ali alias Saddam, MD Aslam alias Tinku, MD Shamser Alam alias Chotu, and MD Shahnawaz.
Interrogations are ongoing to determine the extent of the illegal arms manufacturing network and whether the suspects have ties to any organized criminal groups.
Police sources indicate that this raid is considered a significant success for the Kolkata Police STF, especially in light of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, where security concerns are heightened. Investigators are looking into whether the illegal arms were intended for trafficking during the elections or for other criminal activities.
Authorities have also begun investigating whether the arrested individuals were part of a larger organized arms manufacturing and supply network and if there were other accomplices or masterminds involved in this illegal operation.
In preparation for the Assembly elections, Kolkata Police have intensified monitoring and action to prevent the movement of illegal arms within the state. Recently, a person was arrested in the Gariahat area of South Kolkata with several weapons, reportedly smuggled from Gaya district in Bihar.
Investigators obtained crucial leads during the interrogation of the suspect in that case, providing intelligence on illegal arms manufacturing and smuggling networks in neighboring states.
According to police sources, the operation in Bhagalpur was carried out based on specific intelligence inputs regarding illegal arms manufacturing activities in the area. Initially, the premises appeared to be a regular spinning mill, but a thorough search revealed the hidden illegal arms manufacturing unit on the upper floor, exposing the unlawful operation.
