Mumbai, May 25: In anticipation of Bakrid, the Maharashtra government has adopted a stringent stance against illegal cattle smuggling, unlicensed slaughterhouses, and animal cruelty. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik issued a clear warning that smuggling and illegal slaughter of cattle will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Under the directives of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the transport department has ordered a special inspection campaign across the state. All regional transport officials, sub-regional officers, border check posts, and transport department teams have been instructed to take action from May 25 to May 28.
Sarnaik emphasized that, thanks to Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s efforts, indigenous cows have been honored as ‘Rajmata’ (Mother of the State) in Maharashtra. He stated that for the Hindu community, the cow symbolizes faith and culture, and strict legal action will be taken against those involved in illegal cattle smuggling.
He alleged that cattle smuggling tends to increase during special festivals. Transporting animals in overcrowded vehicles, starving them, and using inhumane methods not only violates the law but also hurts the religious sentiments of the people.
According to directives issued by the Transport Commissioner’s office, special checkpoints and vehicle inspection campaigns will be conducted in border areas, major cities including Mumbai, and sensitive routes. Permits, certificates, and compliance with animal welfare regulations for vehicles transporting animals will be thoroughly scrutinized.
The minister stated that violators of the Motor Vehicle Act, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and central government regulations will not receive any leniency. Vehicles transporting animals against the rules will be seized immediately.
This campaign will involve collaboration between the transport department, local police, traffic police, the animal husbandry department, and various animal welfare organizations. Special teams have also been formed to prevent the supply of animals to illegal slaughterhouses.
Sarnaik asserted that the protection of cows is not merely a legal issue but a matter of Hindutva and cultural identity. He reiterated that the government will not show any leniency towards those who commit cruelty against voiceless animals and is fully committed to cow protection.
The government has requested a detailed report on the actions taken under this special campaign from the relevant authorities.
