Madurai, July 21: The Madurai Corporation in Tamil Nadu is set to implement AI and GPS-based monitoring systems to improve solid waste management in the city. This initiative aims to enhance cleanliness, curb illegal dumping, and increase the efficiency of sanitation services.

The corporation has devised a comprehensive plan that includes identifying locations where waste is frequently discarded. It will also strengthen the monitoring of cleaning operations and establish scientific disposal methods for organic waste.

Under this plan, AI technology will be utilized to pinpoint areas where regulations are repeatedly violated due to illegal dumping. By analyzing data from CCTV cameras and other monitoring systems, AI will automatically detect these sensitive locations, enabling municipal officials to take prompt action before waste piles up.

Additionally, a GPS-based system will be implemented to monitor cleaning staff and waste collection vehicles. This will allow for real-time tracking of vehicle locations, adherence to designated routes, staff attendance, and timely waste collection. This system will enhance accountability among cleaning personnel and facilitate quicker resolution of citizen complaints.

The corporation has identified ten specific locations in the city that are prone to illegal dumping, including the Vandiur Park badminton point, the area around Holy Family School, and in front of the city’s fruit market. Special monitoring will be conducted at these sites to reduce incidents of illegal waste disposal.

To improve organic waste management, the corporation will also establish five new micro-composting centers (MCCs). Currently, there are 30 MCCs operating in Madurai. The introduction of these new centers will increase the city’s decentralized waste processing capacity.

Officials from the corporation state that local disposal of organic waste will reduce the need to transport waste to dumping yards, lower transportation costs, and decrease pressure on landfills. This will contribute to creating a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.

However, social activists have welcomed this initiative while emphasizing the need for more effective door-to-door waste collection systems to achieve lasting improvements.
