Chennai, July 21: The Q Branch police in Tamil Nadu have arrested three Bangladeshi nationals. They were found living and working illegally at a scrap yard near Guduvancheri in Chengalpattu district without valid travel documents.
The arrests followed a tip-off received by the Chengalpattu Q Branch, indicating that some workers at a scrap yard in Kanivakkam were suspected to be Bangladeshi citizens living illegally in the country.
A special police team acted promptly on the information and conducted a surprise inspection at the site, where approximately eight migrant workers from North India were found working and residing.
During the inspection, officials questioned all the workers about their identities and origins. Initially, the three workers claimed to be residents of West Bengal. However, due to inconsistencies in their statements, authorities conducted further inquiries, during which they admitted to being Bangladeshi nationals.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Zakir Bakkir (26), Abdul Salam Sitheri (28), and Arif Sitheri (25). Investigators reported that none of them could produce a passport, visa, or any other valid travel or identification documents to prove their legal presence in India. Preliminary investigations suggest that the trio illegally crossed the India-Bangladesh border several months ago.
Police suspect that they entered Indian territory through an unfenced section of the border before heading to Kolkata by road. It is believed that they then boarded a train to Chennai in search of work.
Upon reaching the suburban area of Chennai, they sought daily wage labor and eventually secured jobs at the scrap yard in Kanivakkam, where they had been working for some time.
Following the interrogation, the Q Branch registered a case against the three under provisions related to illegal entry and unauthorized residence in India. They have been formally arrested, and investigations are ongoing to determine the route they used to enter the country and whether they received assistance from any organized networks or local facilitators.
The police have expanded the scope of the investigation to identify others who may have helped these individuals find employment or accommodation after arriving in India. Authorities are also increasing surveillance in Chennai’s suburban areas to locate other foreign nationals who may be living or working illegally under the guise of migrant laborers.
