New Delhi, July 21: The Supreme Court heard a plea for interim bail from Asaram, who is serving a life sentence for the rape of a minor girl in Jodhpur. The court has requested a detailed medical report from AIIMS regarding Asaram’s health condition.
During the previous hearing, the Supreme Court instructed the Rajasthan government to review Asaram’s medical report. The court asked whether his health status warranted temporary bail. However, the Rajasthan government opposed the interim bail plea.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Rajasthan government, informed the court that Asaram is currently in good health. He noted that Asaram visited the Ayodhya and Kashi Vishwanath temples about three months ago, where he walked on foot. Mehta mentioned that Asaram is experiencing gastrointestinal bleeding, which appears to be temporary and is being treated. He also stated that the state government would present its position after consulting with relevant officials.
In response, the Supreme Court remarked, “If his condition is not that serious, that’s one thing. However, if it deteriorates, we do not want any accusations later.” Asaram’s lawyer argued that his client’s health is indeed serious and he remains at high risk.
The Supreme Court indicated that it would wait for the state government’s medical report before making a decision. If Asaram’s health is found to be genuinely critical, the court may consider granting interim bail for medical treatment purposes.
It is noteworthy that Asaram was convicted in 2018 by a special POCSO court in Jodhpur for raping a minor student at his ashram and was sentenced to life imprisonment. The Rajasthan High Court upheld this sentence. Additionally, Asaram is also serving a life sentence for sexual assault against a female disciple in Gujarat. Following the High Court’s decision, Asaram surrendered at Jodhpur Central Jail on May 28 while out on interim medical bail.
