Chennai, July 21: The Madras High Court has directed Chief Minister Vijay of Tamil Nadu to respond to a new notice concerning an election petition challenging his victory in the Perambur constituency.
In the recent assembly elections, Vijay, the leader of the TVK party, secured a win in Chennai’s Perambur constituency by a margin of 53,715 votes. He received 120,365 votes, while his closest rival, DMK candidate R.T. Sekar, garnered 66,650 votes.
R.T. Sekar, along with voters Dinesh and Lakshmi Narsimman from the Perambur constituency, filed separate election petitions in the Madras High Court contesting Vijay’s election.
In his petition, Sekar alleged that Vijay provided contradictory information in his nomination papers and failed to accurately disclose details about his assets and pending criminal cases. He has requested that Vijay’s election be declared invalid.
The hearing took place before Justice V. Lakshminarayanan. During the proceedings, Sekar’s attorney, Richardson Wilson, informed the court that notices had not been sent to Chief Minister Vijay and the election officer, who were named as respondents in the case. Acknowledging this oversight, Justice V. Lakshminarayanan instructed the issuance of new notices to Vijay, the election officer, and other respondents, and adjourned the hearing for two weeks.
In related news, the Tamil Nadu government has launched a new initiative aimed at enhancing transparency in public administration. This campaign mandates all state government departments, district administrations, local bodies, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and government-owned companies to display anti-corruption information boards prominently. These boards will clearly state that both giving and receiving bribes are punishable offenses.
