Madhya Pradesh Signs MOU to Boost Agro Solar Energy Production

Bhopal, June 15: Madhya Pradesh has taken a significant step towards enhancing agro solar energy production. The state’s Department of New and Renewable Energy, along with the Energy Development Corporation Limited and the Indo-German Agri-Photovoltaic Cooperation Project (IGCAP), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Chief Minister Mohan Yadav was present at the signing ceremony.

Agri-Photovoltaics is an initiative aimed at promoting the dual use of agricultural land for farming and solar energy production. This approach minimizes the need for additional land, ensures food security, and helps avoid land-related disputes. A German company will support this initiative.

This project aligns with various schemes, including PM-KUSUM 2.0, and aims to develop a specialized agri-photovoltaic framework in the state. It will help increase farmers’ incomes, improve land use efficiency, enhance energy security, and promote climate-friendly rural development.

The non-binding MOU will remain effective until May 2030. The government claims that under the agri-solar PV scheme, farmers will receive subsidies, allowing them to retain ownership of their land. They will cultivate crops while also installing solar panels on the same land to generate additional income. This initiative is expected to provide a double benefit to farmers.

Under this partnership, the company will assist in identifying agri-photovoltaic projects, conducting technical and economic assessments, designing, ensuring financial viability, and implementing these projects.

Capacity-building and awareness programs will also be organized for farmers, farmer producer organizations, energy developers, distribution companies (DISCOMs), and other stakeholders. The company will help develop appropriate policy and regulatory frameworks to maintain agricultural productivity and food security in the state.
