Madhya Pradesh Products Achieve Distinct Identity with 27 GI Tags

Bhopal, March 3: Madhya Pradesh’s products are gaining a unique identity both nationally and internationally. Recently, 27 products from the state have been awarded Geographical Indication (GI) tags. A GI tag is linked to the geographical origin of a product.

The Geographical Indications Registry, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, grants these tags. Obtaining a GI tag is crucial for establishing the authenticity of a product.

In fact, Darjeeling tea was the first product in India to receive a GI tag back in 2004. In Madhya Pradesh, various crafts and agricultural products have been recognized with GI tags at the national level. The traditional craft of Bharewa from Betul district has gained national recognition, along with the craft from the Craft Village of Tigria.

Recently, President Droupadi Murmu honored Bharewa artist Baldev Waghmare with the National Handicraft Award in December 2025. Besides Betul, Khajuraho’s stone craft from Chhatarpur, traditional woodcraft from the same district, stone crafts from Gwalior, and Gwalior’s paper mache art have also successfully obtained GI tags.

Other products across the state have received GI tags, including Chanderi sarees, Maheshwari sarees and fabrics, Dhar’s bag print, leather toys from Indore, bell metal ware from Datia and Tikamgarh, Batik print from Ujjain, marble crafts from Jabalpur, Gond paintings from Dindori, and handloom sarees from Warasivni.

Additionally, Gwalior’s geometric patterned carpets, diamonds from Panna, iron crafts from Dindori, Chinnaur rice from Balaghat, Sundarja mango from Rewa, Sharbati wheat from Sehore and Vidisha, Mahoba Desawari pan from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, Nagpuri oranges from Chhindwara and Pandhurna, Kadaknath chicken from Jhabua, apples from Ratlam, Gajak from Morena, Kathi wheat from Bundelkhand, and garlic from Jawra have also been awarded GI tags.

Officials have stated that many other products from Madhya Pradesh are in the pipeline for GI tag recognition and are expected to achieve success soon.
