Mumbai, March 31: The Nandigram constituency is once again in the spotlight as the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections approach. In conversations on Tuesday, several local residents expressed their belief that the BJP will secure a significant victory in the state, while the TMC will be completely sidelined.
Residents claim that serious allegations of corruption against the current government have led to public discontent. One local said, “This time, the BJP will make a strong comeback. The Trinamool Congress government, which faces corruption charges, will be completely cleared out. The BJP will form the government with a clear majority. The state government is merely imitating central schemes like Ayushman Bharat, but this won’t last long. We hope the BJP wins this time.”
Another resident criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stating, “She is a woman herself, yet she has done little for women. There has been no significant progress in development or children’s education.”
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has announced the dates for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Voting will take place in two phases: the first phase on April 23 for 152 seats, and the second phase on April 29 for the remaining 142 seats.
In addition to the BJP and Trinamool Congress, left parties and the Congress are also in the fray. Several smaller parties hold influence in various constituencies, making the competition even more intriguing.
On Monday, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari filed his nomination from Nandigram, accompanied by former state BJP president Dilip Ghosh. This time, the BJP has fielded Adhikari from two constituencies. He previously defeated Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021. Additionally, he is contesting from the Bhawanipur seat, considered Banerjee’s stronghold, where she has won all three elections since coming to power.
