New Delhi, April 7: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated To Lam on his election as the President of Vietnam on Tuesday. In his message, PM Modi expressed a desire to work with President To Lam to deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and Vietnam.

PM Modi expressed confidence that under To Lam’s leadership, the enduring friendship between India and Vietnam would strengthen over time. He wrote on the social media platform X, “Heartfelt congratulations to To Lam on being elected as the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. I am confident that under his leadership, our two countries’ enduring friendship will continue to grow.”

He further stated that he looks forward to collaborating to enhance their comprehensive strategic partnership for the progress and prosperity of their peoples and regions.

On Tuesday, the National Assembly of Vietnam elected To Lam as the country’s president for the term 2026–2031. This decision came after the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPVCC) approved his nomination. PM Modi’s congratulatory message followed the announcement by the National Assembly.

All 495 deputies present voted in favor of the draft proposal for Lam’s election.

To Lam previously served as Vietnam’s president from May 2024 to October 2024. According to Xinhua News Agency, he was elected as the General Secretary of the 13th CPVCC in 2024 and re-elected during the first meeting of the 14th CPVCC on January 23, 2026, for the term 2026-2031.

India and Vietnam share close and amicable bilateral relations, referred to as a comprehensive strategic partnership. According to a statement from the Indian Embassy in Vietnam, the relationship was elevated to a “comprehensive strategic partnership” during PM Modi’s visit to Vietnam in 2016.

The development of India-Vietnam relations is guided by a “joint vision for peace, prosperity, and people,” adopted during a virtual summit on December 21, 2020, between PM Modi and then-Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

In 2022, India and Vietnam celebrated the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations and are actively working together to strengthen their multifaceted cooperation.
