New Delhi, July 1: In a significant leadership change within the Indian Army, Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain has been appointed as the Vice Chief of Army Staff. He officially took charge on July 1 in New Delhi.
Lieutenant General Jain brings nearly four decades of military experience, having commanded in various challenging environments. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and was commissioned into the Mahar Regiment in June 1988. Throughout his extensive military career, he has successfully handled numerous critical responsibilities related to command, staff, and operations.
He has led an infantry battalion in semi-desert areas and played pivotal roles during the United Nations mission in South Sudan. Additionally, he has commanded an infantry brigade under a strike corps, an anti-terrorism force, and a pivot corps in the Northern Command. His military experience also includes participation in Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka and significant contributions to UN missions.
Lieutenant General Jain served as a military observer in Ethiopia under a UN mission and commanded a sector in South Sudan. He has been deployed multiple times in anti-terrorism operations along the Line of Control and in Northeast India, as well as in high-altitude regions. Following his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General, he commanded a corps in the Northern Command and later served as Chief of Staff at the Southern Command headquarters.
In this role, he played a crucial part in enhancing military capabilities, force restructuring, and operational readiness. Upon his promotion to Army Commander, he also served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command. Throughout his career, he has held several key staff and operational appointments across various headquarters and formations, providing him with extensive experience in conventional warfare, anti-terrorism operations, military deployments in high-altitude areas, UN peace missions, and military preparedness in diverse geographical conditions.
Lieutenant General Jain has completed the Higher Command Course at the Army War College and the National Defence Course in Kenya. For his exceptional and distinguished services, he has been awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Army Medal. His appointment as Vice Chief comes at a time when the Indian Army is focusing on modernization, technological upgrades, reforms in theater command, and strengthening its capabilities to meet future combat challenges. His extensive operational experience and leadership skills are expected to accelerate the Army’s combat readiness and organizational reforms.
