Legal Hurdles Cleared, Kamakhya Corridor Project Gains Momentum: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, May 14: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that the ambitious Kamakhya Access Corridor project in Guwahati will see accelerated progress in the coming days, as most legal hurdles related to the redevelopment initiative have now been resolved.

In a post on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister stated that he reviewed the progress of the Kamakhya Corridor project and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to enhancing the experience of pilgrims visiting the revered Kamakhya Temple, located on the Nilachal Hills.

Sarma mentioned in his post, “I have also reviewed the progress of the Kamakhya Access Corridor project. Most legal processes are now complete, so work will speed up in the coming days. Our goal is to provide an exceptional experience for all pilgrims visiting the Kamakhya Temple.”

Launched in February 2024, the ₹498 crore Kamakhya Access Corridor project is one of the largest temple redevelopment initiatives in the Northeast. Its aim is to improve the infrastructure surrounding one of the country’s most revered Shakti Peeths, the historic Kamakhya Temple.

The project seeks to reduce congestion within the temple complex and facilitate the movement of devotees, especially during major religious events like the annual Ambubachi Mela, when millions of pilgrims flock to the temple.

Officials reported that the redevelopment plan includes the construction of a three-tier corridor and widening existing access routes from approximately 8-10 feet to around 27-30 feet.

Additionally, the project aims to expand the open area around the temple complex from nearly 3,000 square feet to over 100,000 square feet.

This corridor project is being implemented under the PM-Devine scheme.

Previously, this redevelopment initiative faced legal and environmental challenges, with petitions filed concerning potential impacts on the heritage structures of the temple and underground water sources on Nilachal Hill.
