Launch of Sujal Village ID: A Digital Revolution in Rural Water Supply

New Delhi, March 13: Union Minister of Jal Shakti, C.R. Patil, launched the ‘Sujal Village ID’ on Friday. This unique digital identity aims to facilitate comprehensive digital mapping of rural water supply through pipelines.

During a meeting with ministers from the Public Health Engineering Departments (PHED) of states and Union Territories, the ID was introduced to discuss the implementation roadmap for the Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0.

Patil stated that for the first time in the country, each rural drinking water scheme will be assigned a digital identity, integrating the rural water supply system onto a unified national platform. So far, 164,000 Sujal Village IDs have been created across 31 states and Union Territories, linked to 67,000 Sujal Bharat IDs.

Previously, Patil urged states to complete projects on time and enhance ground-level monitoring. He emphasized that water is a state subject, and the mission’s success relies on the accountability of state governments to ensure reliable tap water supply in rural homes. V. Somanna, the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, also attended the meeting.

He highlighted that delays in some states were due to technical shortcomings and stressed that any expenses resulting from excessively large or technically non-compliant projects must be borne by the respective state governments, as state funds are public money and should be used with the utmost vigilance and accountability.

The minister insisted on strict adherence to approved technical specifications, expenditure limits, and proper source assessments to ensure the long-term sustainability of rural water supply systems.

An official statement noted that each Sujal Bharat ID integrates infrastructure IDs and service area IDs, creating a comprehensive digital footprint for rural water service delivery.

This initiative represents a significant digital reform and a transformative step that enhances transparency and monitoring, contributing to the vision of a technologically empowered India by 2047.
