Kathmandu, August 29: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and widespread devastation caused by the Bhotekoshi floods in Nepal. The death toll has tragically risen to 626, with many others still missing.
In a statement released from its headquarters in Geneva, the IOM affirmed its readiness to assist in relief and rehabilitation efforts tailored to the needs and national priorities of both Tibet and Nepal. The organization is collaborating with government agencies and humanitarian partners in Nepal to contribute to these efforts.
Access to essential services has been disrupted, creating an urgent need for humanitarian assistance. The IOM reminded that during previous disasters, it provided support in areas such as temporary shelter, non-food items, camp management, health services, data management, early rehabilitation, and livelihood restoration.
The situation in Nepal remains critical, with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reporting that nearly 2,500 individuals are still missing. The floods have caused significant destruction, prompting support from the UN and various nations worldwide. India has also stepped up, providing assistance during this challenging time.
So far, India has dispatched 57.5 tons of emergency relief supplies for flood victims, with an additional 10 tons arriving in Kathmandu on Friday night. Alongside the supplies, a team of 11 medical professionals and paramedics has been sent to aid in the relief efforts.
