Mumbai, August 12: A tragic incident occurred in Kurla (West), Mumbai, on Wednesday morning due to heavy rainfall. A landslide happened in the Gausiya Chawl area of Chirag Nagar, burying several individuals under debris. Rescue teams have recovered two bodies from the rubble. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other rescue teams promptly arrived at the scene to conduct relief operations.
According to the BMC, the landslide was reported early on August 12 in Chirag Nagar, Kurla (West). The debris fell on two to three rooms adjacent to the chawl. It is feared that six to eight people may still be trapped under the rubble. Rescue operations are ongoing, with 50 personnel from the fire department, police, ambulances, NDRF, and BMC present at the site. The Mumbai Fire Brigade reported that the incident occurred at 4:32 AM.
So far, two injured individuals have been rescued and admitted to the hospital, where their condition is stable. The injured have been identified as Sohail Ansari (18 years) and Mohammad Ansari (14 years). The two deceased, Sahil Ansari (28) and Mohammad Sameer (14), were sent to Rajawadi Hospital, where they were pronounced dead by CMO Dr. Vishal.
In response to the incident, BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde and Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Avinash Dhakne visited the landslide site.
DCP Ganesh Shinde stated, “The landslide occurred in the Ashok Nagar area, which falls under the jurisdiction of Ghatkopar police, due to the rain. So far, two bodies have been recovered, and the rescue operation is ongoing. A rescue team is present at the incident site.”
It is important to note that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continued monsoon rains in Mumbai. A yellow alert has been issued for heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad regions.
