Kolkata, August 19: Kunal Ghosh, a legislator from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), expressed strong disapproval on Wednesday regarding the arrest warrant issued against TMC MP Mahua Moitra. He targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), labeling the situation in the state as a ‘jungle raj’ and ‘police raj.’
In a conversation with reporters, Ghosh stated, “This is a manifestation of political vendetta. It is being done for political reasons. They are targeting TMC leaders and workers. Sometimes they issue warrants, sometimes they attack their homes, and at other times they detain workers on baseless charges.”
He further alleged, “All of this is happening under a jungle raj, a police raj. This is the reality in Bengal. The AITC delegation that approached the State Human Rights Commission raised these issues. Our workers are facing false charges, being arrested without cause, humiliated, and tortured. There have been deaths in lockups, and eggs are being thrown—what is happening here? Many of our workers cannot return home.”
Ghosh also expressed sorrow over a fire that broke out late Tuesday night at the ‘Shikha Inn’ hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in Kolkata. He remarked, “This incident is very unfortunate. The fire has tarnished Kolkata’s reputation. Those responsible, regardless of who they are, must face strict action.”
He referenced a recent fire incident in Tarapith, stating, “This is a very unfortunate event. Following the fire in Tarapith, a similar incident occurred in Kolkata. Lives were lost, which is tragic. There should be a fair investigation, and everyone must remain vigilant.”
Ghosh posed several questions to the administration regarding the hotel fire: “Why did this happen? How did it occur? Why were so many people unable to escape? The administration must consider all these aspects. After such incidents, only discussions and committees are formed, but there is no follow-up. Whenever such an event occurs, there is some discussion for a while, suggestions are made, committees are formed, recommendations come in, but later, there is no oversight. Then another disaster happens. This should not be the case.”
