Tripura CM Criticizes Previous Government for Overlooking Manikya Dynasty Heritage

Agartala, August 19: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has criticized the previous Left Front government for neglecting the significant contributions of the Manikya dynasty and Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya to the state’s development.

Speaking at an event commemorating the 118th birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, Saha stated that the history which should have reached the public was deliberately kept from them. He alleged that there was an attempt to limit the royal era’s history to the past, preventing people from understanding its contributions to Tripura’s growth.

Referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s phrase “development and heritage,” CM Saha emphasized that individuals who have worked for the nation and society deserve proper recognition, particularly the Manikya dynasty, which played a crucial role in Tripura’s development.

He noted that during Maharaja Bir Bikram’s reign, there was improved coordination and unity between tribal and non-tribal communities. The Maharaja traveled to several foreign countries, broadening his perspective, which influenced his developmental ideas for Tripura.

According to the Chief Minister, Maharaja Bir Bikram initiated several important projects for the state. He established one of the oldest municipal bodies in Agartala and took numerous steps for the overall development of the city and the state.

Saha pointed out that the Maharaja’s contributions spanned various sectors, and his vision and initiatives were pivotal in shaping modern Tripura. He accused the previous government of intentionally failing to honor the contributions and legacy of the Manikya dynasty and Maharaja Bir Bikram.

The Chief Minister remarked that some individuals still remain silent about the remarkable contributions of the Manikya dynasty. However, the current government has made sincere efforts to restore their rightful place in Tripura’s history and to honor them.

He urged that the contributions of the former royal family, especially those of Maharaja Bir Bikram, should be remembered by the current generation and properly documented so that future generations can understand their role in Tripura’s development.

Saha stressed the need to preserve the historical legacy of the Manikya dynasty and to ensure that the contributions of the royal era receive appropriate recognition in the state’s history. He stated that remembering the contributions of former rulers is not merely about recalling history but also about recognizing the visionary efforts and developmental works that played a role in shaping Tripura.

The Chief Minister affirmed that the state government will continue its efforts to highlight the historical contributions of the Manikya dynasty and Maharaja Bir Bikram, ensuring their legacy is integrated into the mainstream narrative of the state’s development and history.

It is noteworthy that after the merger agreement was signed on October 15, 1949, between the then Regent Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi and the Governor-General of India, the erstwhile princely state of Tripura came under the administration of the Government of India.
