New Delhi, August 19: Members of the ‘Jai Gadhiya Baba Adivasi Lok Mandri Dance Troupe’ from Chhattisgarh expressed their gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government for the opportunity to perform at President Droupadi Murmu’s ‘At Home’ reception during the 80th Independence Day celebrations.
Artists from Saraitola village in the Nagri block of Dhamtari district showcased traditional folk dance, elevating Chhattisgarh’s culture on a national stage.
For these rural artists, this moment was not only a recognition of their dedication to art but also a source of immense pride for Dhamtari district and the entire state. The Saraitola dance troupe is renowned for its unique traditional dance style, ‘Gutta Mandar’ (a tribal folk dance), characterized by vibrant rhythms, folk songs, traditional attire, and local instruments.
Ratan Lal, a member of the troupe, shared that he never imagined performing in front of the President, Prime Minister, and other distinguished guests. He expressed gratitude to the district collector and the villagers for their support.
Another troupe member, Surendra Sori, remarked, “Performing in front of the President is a significant achievement for us. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure, local artists, even from small villages, are gaining recognition.” He also thanked the government for creating opportunities that allow educated unemployed individuals to showcase their talents through art.
Ruprai Netam, the director of the troupe, also expressed appreciation for the chance to promote their art.
During the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, the sacred grounds of the country’s largest constitutional institution were filled with the beats of ‘Mandar’, traditional songs, and the rhythm of group dances, bringing the vibrant colors of Chhattisgarh’s folk culture to life.
Their performances beautifully depicted the tribal community’s daily life, festivals, social issues, unity, and age-old traditions.
